The title of the exhibition is taken from Gertude Stein’s autobiography.
Of a large collection of autobiographies I made a selection based on their titles and on their authors' back grounds.
I wanted a combination of titles that I can somehow find myself in, but I was also aiming at an imaginary conversation between the authors.
The title of an autobiography can be seen as an ultimate statement about a person’s life. At the same time it is a persona rather than an actual person that we are dealing with. How does one portrait oneself to the world? As an artist being invited to participate in an exhibition, but also as a visitor navigating through and simultaneously obscuring with one’s own presence the works on display.
In the installation our mirrored image becomes part of the work and the titles of the autobiographies can function as captions or headlines that we may agree or disagree with.
